The Winchester boys varsity soccer team has faced a rollercoaster start to the 2025 season, but the message from the team is clear: there’s plenty of potential still to unlock.

Led by their four captains — attacking midfielder Kadhir Kumaran, defensive anchors Casey Trumbower and Marvin Li, and versatile junior Cole Queenan — the Sachems sit at 2-3-1 after six games.

The season began on a high note with a commanding 7-0 victory over Wilmington on the road, but since then the squad has been tested. A 2-0 loss to Arlington and a 1-1 draw with Stoneham slowed momentum, though the team bounced back with a sharp 2-0 win against Woburn. Consecutive 3-1 defeats to Melrose and Lexington, the latter played largely a man down after a red card just 15 minutes in, have underscored both the team’s resilience and areas for improvement.

“We’ve shown we can possess the ball and create plenty of chances,” Kumaran said. “But poor finishing and some sloppy mistakes have cost us.”

Even so, standout performances have kept Winchester in every match. Tom Duval leads the team with three goals, while attackers Shawn Kinyanjui and Ean Errico have added consistent energy up top. On defense, Trumbower and Li have been “absolute rocks” in the back line, while junior goalkeeper Will Brown — a varsity player since his freshman year — continues to shine with steady play in net.

The schedule doesn’t get any easier, with upcoming games against Arlington, Belmont,

Lexington, and Reading, but the Sachems are confident in their depth.

The team will next take the field at home on Wednesday at 6 p.m. against Reading, a match that also serves as Senior Night. For Winchester, it’s more than just another game — it’s a chance to show just how strong this team can be when everything clicks.
